Everything You Should Know About Dental Implants

Teeth are used to chew food. They also contribute to the overall aesthetic appeal of an individual. Therefore, it is not surprising that people will do almost anything to take care of their teeth. However, there are situations in which you may lose your teeth for one reason or another. It can be devastating, but fortunately there are solutions available in the market. One such solution is dental implants, which a dentist will use to provide support for artificial teeth. What should you know about dental implants before you consider them?

1. What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are frames or metal posts that the dentist will surgically position into your jawbone, right beneath your gum. The post will eventually fuse with the natural bone, thus giving you firm support for the artificial teeth. The result is more natural-looking teeth, which also feel great.

2. Who Is The Right Candidate For Dental Implants?

The good news is that most people can be eligible. You must have healthy gums, adequate bone support and be at an age when your jawbone is no longer growing. However, like any other medical procedure, not everyone can qualify for dental implants. Your doctor will evaluate your overall health and advise appropriately. People who may not be eligible include those who smoke, drink excessive alcohol, have uncontrolled diabetes and those who have cancer. If you take medications that suppress your immune system, you will also not be suitable.

3. What Is The Process Like?

The doctor will give the go-ahead after evaluation, and he will typically do the surgery under general anesthesia. The process takes several months. There is the implant stage, which takes 3 to 6 months for the total fusion of the implant to the jawbone.  The attaching stage is when the surgeon will attach a post to the implant and allow the tissue to grow over it. The final step is crown attachment -- this is when the dentist will attach the crown to the post.

4. What Is The Success Rate?

The success rate will vary depending on several factors, including your dental hygiene, where the implant is and the experience of the doctor, among other factors. Overall, up to 98% of the cases are successful.

Dental implants can help bring the smile back to your face. However, you must equip yourself with the right knowledge if you are thinking about getting implants. Consult a dentist for more information to help you decide if dental implants are right for you.
